I Used to Hate Wearing Lipstick. Here Is What Changed My Mind

by Glam Bank 10 Mar 2026

I want to be upfront about something. For most of my adult life I genuinely avoided lipstick. Not because I did not like the idea of it. I actually loved how it looked on other people. I avoided it because every time I tried it on myself it felt wrong. Too much, too heavy, too high maintenance. It would look fine for an hour and then fade into a patchy, uneven mess that I would spend the rest of the day self-consciously rubbing off.

So I just stopped. Tinted lip balm on good days, nothing on most days. I told myself lipstick was not really my thing and left it at that.

Then I came across a nude lip pencil and a lip oil and something completely shifted. Not in a dramatic, life-changing way. More in a quiet, oh so this is what I was missing kind of way. I wear lipstick almost every day now and I genuinely enjoy it. Here is what actually changed.

Why Lipstick Never Worked for Me Before

Looking back the reasons are obvious but at the time I had no idea. I was doing everything wrong without knowing there was a right way to do it.

My lips were chronically dry which meant any lipstick I applied immediately clung to flaky patches and looked uneven from the start. I was going straight from bare lips to lipstick with nothing in between. No base, no liner, no prep. Just pressing colour directly onto an unprepared surface and wondering why it never looked the way it did in the tube.

I was also choosing the wrong kinds of shades. Bold colours felt like too much commitment and pale pinks looked washed out and strange on my skin tone. I kept landing in a middle ground of shades that did not do anything for me one way or the other. Nothing I tried felt like me.

The Nude Lip Pencil That Changed Everything

The first thing that changed was discovering the  Precise Contour Lip Pencil in Light. Light is a nude shade and it is the kind of nude that actually works. Not too pale, not too pink, just a warm, natural tone that enhances your lips without looking like you are wearing a lip product at all.

What I did not expect was how much using a lip pencil before anything else would change how my lips looked. I started lining my lips with Light and then filling in my entire lip with it, not just the edges. The transformation was immediate and genuinely surprising. My lips looked more defined, more lifted and fuller without any dramatic colour. Just better. Like a more polished version of my natural lip.

The formula is highly pigmented so you get full coverage in one pass without pressing hard. It is waterproof and smudge proof which means it stays exactly where you put it. And because it is a wooden pencil you can sharpen it to whatever tip you need, a fine point for precise edges or slightly broader for filling in quickly.

For someone who had spent years thinking lipstick was not for them, this single product made me realise the issue was never lipstick itself. It was that I had never given my lips a proper base to work with.

Why a Nude Shade Specifically Made the Difference

Part of why I had always struggled with lipstick was the commitment of it. A bold red or a deep brown feels like a statement and some days I just did not want to make that statement. What I actually wanted was something that made me look put together without looking like I was trying hard.

A nude lip liner does exactly that. When you fill in your lips with a nude pencil, you get shape and definition without any dramatic colour shift. Your lips look more contoured, more even and more alive but in a way that reads as your lips at their best rather than your lips in a different colour.

It is the lipstick equivalent of a your skin but better base. And once I understood that, the whole idea of wearing something on my lips every day stopped feeling like effort and started feeling like a choice I actually wanted to make.

Then I Added the Lip Oil and Everything Got Even Better

The second thing that changed my relationship with lip products was the  Hydragloss Lip Treatment. I started using it as an overnight treatment initially, applying it before bed and letting the Hyaluronic Acid, Jojoba Oil, Shea Butter and Sweet Almond Oil do their work while I slept.

Within a couple of weeks my lips were genuinely softer and more even. The chronic dryness that had always made lipstick look patchy on me started to go away. And once that happened, everything I put on my lips started performing better. The nude pencil glided on more smoothly. Colour applied more evenly. That tight, uncomfortable feeling I had always associated with wearing anything on my lips disappeared entirely.

I also started adding a dot of the Hydragloss Lip Treatment in Moonlight right in the centre of my lips after the pencil, on days when I wanted just a hint of shine and a soft pink wash of colour. It is non-sticky, lightweight and adds the most beautiful dimension to a nude lip. On other days I use Starlight which is completely clear and works over literally anything.

Together the nude pencil and the lip oil became my everyday combination. Some days that is all I wear. Other days I layer a lipstick on top and the whole look is elevated by the preparation underneath.

What I Wish Someone Had Told Me Sooner

If you have ever felt like lipstick is just not for you, I genuinely understand that feeling. I had it for years. But looking back I think what I was actually experiencing was not an incompatibility with lipstick. It was a combination of unprepped lips, the wrong shades and no base to work with.

The fix is not finding a magic lipstick. It is taking care of your lips first and then giving them a proper base before anything else goes on. Those two steps change how every single lip product performs on you, whether it is a bold colour, a nude or nothing at all.

  • Hydrate consistently with a lip oil, especially overnight, so your lips are actually smooth and nourished before any product touches them

  • Start with a nude lip liner as your base, filling in your entire lip, not just lining the edges

  • Build from there. Some days the liner and lip oil is enough. Other days add a lipstick on top and see how differently it performs on a properly prepped lip.

That is the whole system. Three things that took me years to figure out but that I genuinely wish someone had just told me on day one.

For Anyone Who Has Given Up on Lipstick

I am not going to pretend that lipstick is for everyone. Some people genuinely prefer bare lips and that is completely fine. But if you have written it off because it never seemed to work on you specifically, I think it is worth trying again with the right starting point.

The  Precise Contour Lip Pencil in Light is the most accessible entry point I can think of for anyone who has struggled with lip products. It is nude, it is natural-looking, it requires no commitment to a colour and it immediately makes your lips look better in a way that feels effortless rather than overdone.

Pair it with the  Hydragloss Lip Treatment for the hydration side and give it two weeks of consistency. The difference in how your lips look and how lip products perform on them will be enough to change your mind. It changed mine completely.
