Lip Oil Is Not Lip Gloss: Here Is the Difference and Why It Matters | Glambank

by Glam Bank 06 Mar 2026

When lip oils started showing up everywhere, most people including me assumed they were just a fancier version of lip gloss. Same shine, same finish, just a different name on the packaging. So I did not really think much about switching.

Then I actually tried one and realised they are not the same product at all. Not even close. The way they feel on the lips, what they do for your lips over time and the occasions you reach for them are completely different. Once you understand the difference, it genuinely changes how you think about your lip routine.

What Lip Gloss Actually Is

Lip gloss has been around for decades and its job is pretty simple. It adds shine and sometimes colour to the lips. Most lip glosses are made with a base of polybutene or similar synthetic ingredients that create that thick, shiny finish. They sit on top of the lip surface and reflect light, which is what gives you the glossy look.

The problem is that lip gloss does not absorb into the lip at all. It coats the surface. And because most formulas are quite thick and sticky, they tend to attract everything. Dust, hair, anything floating nearby ends up on your lips. The shine also fades fairly quickly, especially after eating or drinking, which is why people end up reapplying constantly.

Some lip glosses do contain moisturising ingredients but they are usually present in small amounts and they do not penetrate deeply enough to make a real difference to lip health over time. It is mostly surface-level shine and not much else.

What Lip Oil Actually Is

Lip oil is a skincare product for your lips. That is the simplest way to describe it. Where lip gloss coats the surface, lip oil absorbs into the lip tissue and delivers real, active hydration from within.

A good lip oil is formulated with plant-based oils and active skincare ingredients that work the same way a serum works on your skin. They do not just sit on top. They penetrate, they nourish and they improve the actual condition of your lips with consistent use. The shine you get from a lip oil is a natural byproduct of well-hydrated lips, not a synthetic coating.

The Glambank Hydragloss Lip Treatment is a good example of what a proper lip oil looks like. It contains Sweet Almond Oil, Jojoba Oil, Hyaluronic Acid, Peach Extract and Shea Butter. Each of these ingredients has a specific function. Hyaluronic Acid draws moisture into the lip tissue and holds it there. Jojoba Oil mimics the skin's natural oils to lock in hydration. Sweet Almond Oil repairs and nourishes with Vitamins A and E. Shea Butter provides deep, instant moisture. Peach Extract refreshes and revitalises. These are not just filler ingredients. They are doing real work on your lips every time you apply.

The Feel Is Completely Different

If you have ever avoided lip gloss because of how sticky it feels, lip oil is worth trying for that reason alone. The texture is lightweight and non-sticky in a way that gloss almost never is. It glides on smoothly, absorbs quickly and leaves your lips feeling comfortable rather than coated.

There is no pulling sensation, no heaviness and nothing attracting every bit of dust or hair to your face. It just sits softly on the lips and feels like nothing is there, which is exactly what you want from something you are wearing all day.

Lip gloss, on the other hand, has that characteristic thick, tacky feel that some people love and others find completely unwearable. It is not subtle. You know it is there. Lip oil is the opposite experience entirely.

What They Each Do for Your Lips Over Time

This is probably the most important distinction between the two. Lip gloss does not change your lips. It enhances how they look while it is on and that is it. The moment you wipe it off or it fades, your lips are exactly the same as before you applied it.

Lip oil is cumulative. The more consistently you use it, the better your lips actually become. The hydrating and nourishing ingredients build up over time and the result is lips that are genuinely softer, smoother and healthier-looking even when you are wearing nothing on them. Chronic dryness improves. Pigmentation can start to even out. The lip surface becomes more uniform which means any lip colour you apply on top goes on more smoothly.

If you have been using lip gloss for years and still dealing with dry or flaky lips, this is probably why. Gloss was never going to fix that. Oil can.

How Long They Each Last

Lip gloss is a short-wear product. It fades quickly, especially after eating or drinking and most people need to reapply every hour or two to maintain the look. That constant reapplication also means you are going through the product faster which adds up in cost over time.

A good lip oil lasts significantly longer. The Glambank Hydragloss Lip Treatment lasts 6 to 8 hours, which means you are not reaching for it every hour. And because it is actually hydrating your lips rather than just coating them, the benefit does not disappear the moment the product fades. Your lips stay in better condition regardless.

Choosing Your Shade: Moonlight, Starlight or Sunshine

One thing lip oil and lip gloss do have in common is the option to add a hint of colour. The Glambank Hydragloss Lip Treatment comes in three shades, each one transparent and tinted rather than fully pigmented, so you get a natural, barely-there wash of colour with your hydration.

  • Moonlight is a soft pink tint with a subtle shimmer and a strawberry fragrance. It is the most universally flattering of the three and works beautifully on its own or layered over lipstick for a glossy, dimensional finish.

  • Starlight is completely clear with a slight shimmer and a vanilla fragrance. If you want the hydration and shine without any colour, this is the one. It is also the best option for wearing over any lipstick shade without changing the colour underneath.

  • Sunshine is an orange-tinted shade with a light shimmer and a fresh citrus fragrance. It adds warmth and vibrancy to the lips and looks especially beautiful on medium to deep Indian skin tones.

All three have the same deeply hydrating formula underneath. The shade is just about what kind of finish you prefer.

When to Reach for Lip Oil vs Lip Gloss

There are honestly very few situations where lip gloss does something lip oil cannot. But here is a simple way to think about it:

  • Reach for lip oil when you want hydration, long-lasting comfort, a natural shine and something that is actually improving your lips with every use. Daily wear, over lipstick, as an overnight treatment and as a standalone product.

  • Reach for lip gloss if you specifically want that thick, high-shine dramatic finish and you do not mind the stickiness or the frequent reapplication. It is a look-specific product rather than a care product.

For most people most of the time, lip oil covers everything lip gloss does and more. The shine is more natural, the wear is longer, the feel is better and your lips are actually getting something out of it.

Your Lips Are Worth More Than Surface Shine

Lip gloss has its place but it was never designed to take care of your lips. It was designed to look good on them for an hour or two. If what you actually want is lips that look good, feel good and get better over time, lip oil is the product you have been looking for.

The Glambank Hydragloss Lip Treatment is lightweight, non-sticky, deeply hydrating and available in three shades for every preference. It works as a standalone product, as a topper over lipstick and as an overnight treatment. It is paraben-free, vegan, cruelty-free and made with natural ingredients.

Once you try it, going back to lip gloss feels like a step backward. Your lips will thank you for it.
