How to Make Your Lipstick Last 8 Hours: The Exact Method That Actually Works

by Glambank Beauty 13 Apr 2026

Most people assume that if their lipstick does not last, the problem is the lipstick. So they buy a different one. Then another. They spend money chasing a formula that will somehow stay on without needing any thought about how it is applied, and they keep being disappointed.

The truth is that how you apply lipstick matters as much as what you apply. A mediocre formula applied correctly will outlast an excellent formula applied carelessly every single time. And once you know the method, applying it takes less than five minutes and becomes second nature.

I have been using this routine for long enough now that it is completely automatic. Here is every step, exactly why it works and what you need to make it happen.

Step One: Prepare the Surface Before Anything Else

Lipstick applied to unprepared lips is like paint applied to a rough, unprimed wall. It catches on dry patches, sits unevenly and comes away in chunks. Before any product touches your lips, the surface needs to be smooth and hydrated.

Apply the Glambank Hydragloss Lip Treatment to your lips and let it absorb for sixty seconds. The Hyaluronic Acid, Jojoba Oil and Shea Butter smooth the lip surface, fill in any dry patches and create a nourished base that lip product adheres to significantly better than bare dry skin. After sixty seconds, blot gently once with a tissue to remove any surface excess. You want the hydration in the lip tissue, not a slippery layer sitting on top.

This one step makes a visible difference to how evenly your lipstick applies and how long it holds. Smooth, hydrated lips grip product better. It is that simple.

Step Two: Fill Your Entire Lip with Pencil — Not Just the Edges

This is the most misunderstood step in lipstick application and the one that makes the most dramatic difference to wear time. Most people use lip liner to outline the lip and nothing else. That is not the step that extends wear. What extends wear is using the liner to fill in the entire lip surface as a complete base layer.

The Glambank Precise Contour Lip Pencil is highly pigmented, waterproof and smudge-proof. Applied across your entire lip it creates a pigmented foundation that gives your lipstick something to grip onto. Lipstick applied over bare skin slides because there is nothing for it to adhere to. Lipstick applied over a filled-in pencil base grips because the pencil itself is set. The result is a look that lasts hours longer than it would without this step.

The other thing the pencil base does is act as a safety net as the lipstick wears. When the top layers of lipstick fade through the day the pencil underneath is still there, maintaining the colour and shape of the look so you never end up with bare lips with just a faded ring around the outside.

Match your pencil shade to your lipstick:

  • Light — Nude pencil. Works under all nude and pink shades.

  • Live — Deep Brown pencil. The most versatile base for warm nudes, mauves and reds on Indian skin.

  • Love — Deep Red pencil. Specifically for bold red and berry lip looks.

  • Laugh — Bright Pink pencil. For vibrant pink and coral lip looks.

Step Three: Apply the First Layer of Lipstick Thinly

Here is the counterintuitive part: applying more lipstick does not make it last longer. A thick, heavy application sits on the surface of the lip without adhering properly and comes off faster as a result. A thin, even layer bonds to the pencil base underneath and sets more cleanly.

Apply the Glambank Airvelour Creme Matte Lipcolor in one smooth, thin pass across the entire lip. Work from the centre outward. Press your lips together gently once after applying to distribute the colour evenly. Do not rub or press hard — just a light press to ensure full contact across the surface.

The formula has Argan Oil, Jojoba Oil, Macadamia Oil, Hyaluronic Acid and Licorice Extract built in, which means even this first thin layer delivers rich, even colour without pulling or dragging across the lip. Seven shades to choose from:

Step Four: Blot with a Tissue

Take a single layer of tissue paper, place it between your lips and press gently once. That is the blot. Do not rub, do not fold the tissue and press multiple times, just one gentle press.

What the blot does is remove the surface layer of oils and emollients from the lipstick that has not bonded to the pencil base underneath. What remains after blotting is the pigment, set and bonded. The surface layer that transfers to cups, food and other surfaces is gone. What is left is the colour that is going to stay.

After blotting the lip will look slightly matte and less vibrant than it did before. This is correct. The next step brings the colour back.

Step Five: Apply the Second Layer of Lipstick

Apply a second thin layer of lipstick directly over the blotted first layer. This second layer goes on over set pigment rather than bare skin or pencil, which means it adheres even better than the first and gives you the full depth of colour you are looking for.

The combination of the pencil base, the set first layer and the fresh second layer creates a lipstick application that has multiple bonded layers rather than one thick coat sitting loosely on the surface. This is why the method works. Each layer has something to grip onto and together they are significantly more durable than any single application could be.

For most occasions two layers after the blot is exactly right. The look is rich, even and will last comfortably through a full working day, through eating and through the Indian heat.

Step Six: The Lip Oil Finish That Adds Durability

This step surprises most people. The instinct is that adding an oil on top of lipstick would make it slide off faster. The opposite is true when done correctly.

A small dot of the Glambank Hydragloss Lip Treatment placed only in the very centre of the lower lip, not all over, does three things. It adds a natural dimension and shine that makes the matte lipstick look more intentional and polished. It keeps the lip surface comfortable and hydrated throughout the day, which reduces the urge to lick your lips, the single biggest cause of premature lipstick fading. And it creates a finishing layer that seals the edges of the look and adds a subtle protective barrier over the lipstick underneath.

The key is a single dot in the centre, not a full coat. You are not applying the lip oil over the whole lip. You are adding a finishing detail that elevates the look without compromising the durability of what is underneath.

All three shades work for this:

  • Starlight — Clear. Works over every shade without altering the colour.

  • Moonlight — Soft Pink. Adds warmth and works particularly well over nude and rosy shades.

  • Sunshine — Warm Orange. Adds vibrancy, especially beautiful over warm nude and red shades on deeper skin tones.

The Complete Six-Step Method at a Glance

Put together, the full routine looks like this:

  • Apply lip oil and let absorb for 60 seconds, then blot gently.

  • Fill entire lip with pencil — edge to edge, not just the outline.

  • Apply first thin layer of lipstick, press lips together gently.

  • Blot once with a single layer of tissue.

  • Apply second thin layer of lipstick over the blotted base.

  • Finish with a dot of lip oil in the centre of the lower lip only.

Total time from start to finish: under five minutes. Wear time: eight hours or more with normal eating and drinking. This is the complete method and every step earns its place in it.

When You Need It to Last Even Longer

For occasions where you genuinely cannot touch up at all, a wedding, a long flight, a full day event, one additional step takes the wear time to its maximum.

After the second layer of lipstick, blot once more and apply a third thin layer. Three layers of set pigment over a pencil base, finished with a dot of lip oil, will last through most of what a full Indian event day throws at it. The look maintains its shape because of the pencil base and its colour because of the layered, blotted lipstick. A mid-event touch-up with the pencil alone, no need to reapply the lipstick, is usually enough to keep the look fresh for the rest of the day.

The Method Is What Makes the Difference

Lipstick that lasts eight hours is not magic and it does not require spending a lot of money. It requires applying it correctly. The method in this guide works with any reasonably good lipstick formula but it works best with a formula that was built for wear, like the Glambank Airvelour Creme Matte Lipcolor, and a base layer that is genuinely pigmented, waterproof and built to hold, like the Glambank Precise Contour Lip Pencil.

Try the full six-step method once and you will understand why it works better than anything else you have tried. The Glambank lip pencil, the Airvelour Creme Matte Lipcolor and the Hydragloss Lip Treatment together are everything you need. The rest is technique.
